Accessible Technology Program

From Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada

The new Accessible Technology Program will co-fund innovative projects led by the private sector, not-for-profit organizations and research institutes to develop new assistive and adaptive digital devices and technologies.

It will invest $22.3 million over 5 years, starting in 2017-18 to make it easier for Canadians with disabilities to more fully participate in the digital economy.

The Program is part of the Government of Canada’s Innovation and Skills Plan, and aims to facilitate and encourage the participation of under-represented groups in the digital economy by investing in initiatives that provide them with the necessary tools, access and skills to participate.

Employment opportunities for all Canadians are critical for growing the economy and Canada’s success depends on leveraging our diverse talent pool. The need for digitally-skilled workers is growing and the government is working to ensure that all Canadians are equipped to meet the demand.

Why this is important

Canadians living with disabilities have the same ambitions as all other Canadiansthey want opportunities to find good, well-paying jobs, make a contribution to their communities and the economy, and build a better life for themselves and their families.

Assistive and adaptive digital devices and technologies, which are specifically designed for persons with disabilities, can offer a solution to the participation challenges experienced in today’s digital age.

The Accessible Technology Program will help to fill the gap in support for the development of assistive and adaptive digital devices and technologies which enable persons with disabilities to fully participate in society. It will help remove barriers to Internet access and other digital services for Canadians with disabilities, will help them gain the digital skills they need for the good, well-paying jobs they want, and enable them to fully participate in the digital economy.

By co-funding innovative projects to develop new solutions the Program will help increased accessibility for persons with disabilities and will work to empower persons with disabilities with new opportunities to participate in the economy.
